Happy Party Planning!!!

So, funny story… I was planning to write this post about summertime cookies, and as always, I planned to send you to Sweet Sugar Belle to see what she’s been making lately.  (Cute, cute fourth of July cookies, for one!)  And then I clicked on to her blog this morning, and what do I read?  20+ Ways to Use a Star Cookie Cutter.  She gathered together a bunch of her baking friends and offered a “star cookie cutter” challenge, and the result is a FABULOUS array of star cookies.  You know I’m sharing my favorites below (although they ALL are FAB!)

First, here is Sweet Sugar Belle’s star cookie post from a few days ago… how to make patriotic floral star cookies:

If using a pastry bag and tip for the first time – watch this terrific “how to make a pastry bag (frosting bag) and use frosting tips” video.  Unfortunately you have to sit through an annoying advertisement first but the video is worth it.

From Klickitat Street, amazing rocket ship cookies.  My boys would LOVE these!!  Her tutorial is great, although you’ll need some skill with the icing to make them look as good as hers!

And finally, quilted star cookies from Cookie Craze.  I’m partial to these because my mother is a quilter.  I can’t wait to check back for the tutorial on how to make them.

This one isn’t on the Sweet Sugar Belle list, but I found a really great recipe and tutorial for Lemon Nut Star cookies from Taste of Home.

And one finally star cookie tutorial… this one incorporates really COOL “message in a cookie” cutters from Williams and SonomaClick HERE to read the fab tutorial from Lick the Bowl Good:

Aren’t these star cookies great!

Summer Cake and Summer Dessert Recipes & Ideas

I am SO excited about today’s post.  I had a LOT of fun (and a few helpers) when I went looking for summertime desserts and summertime cake ideas.  My kids all voted for the following links and tutorials as their favorites!

First, from Make and Takes, a delish Watermelon “Pie” recipe.  Simple to make but oh-so-much fun!:

And sticking with a watermelon theme for just a minute, check out these adorable (and yummy looking) watermelon cupcakes, from Bakingdom: She used black sugar pearls as the seeds but they aren’t readily available so I would use mini chocolate chips!

From Family Fun, you HAVE to see this Towering Sandcastle Cake recipe!  I think this one was voted TOP recipe by all THREE of my kids. (Probably because we live in the desert, and playing with sand is something they just imagine and dream about).  And yes – you can make it!  Read through the instructions and you’ll see how EASY it is to make!

For you fondant lovers, I have a sweet, sweet cake recipe from Sweetapolita.  Click to read all about the Rainbow Doodle Birthday cake!  She takes you through step-by-step instructions on how to make a rainbow cake but I’m sharing these tips to make it *way* easier if you aren’t a master baker (the cake is easy – the buttercream is delicious but a bit of work!). 1) If you don’t want to make a fancy buttercream frosting than use any frosting you are comfortable making or purchase canned frosting; I won’t tell if you won’t. (but…if you’ve never made a real buttercream you may want to try her recipe.  It’s fabulous!) 2) You can purchase fondant at most craft stores as well as many bakeres (including supermarket bakeries) are happy to sell you some.  Just ask! 3). Edible ink pens are available in the baking section of craft stores.

And finally, from The Two Savvy Sisters, an adorable recipe for a Caterpillar Cupcake… cake.  Very simple to put together… but would have a HUGE wow factor with kiddos at a party!

What are YOUR ideas for summertime party desserts and cakes?

Summer Shrimp Sandwich Recipe

fish sandwich recipe

We entertain often. More so in the summer months.  So I was determined to find a summer sandwich recipe that was not only delicious – but that was easy to prep ahead of time and that would be equally good as a lunch or dinner entree.  Voila this delicious shrimp sandwich recipe!  When served on mini rolls they make great party sandwiches.

Fab Friday FREE Printables – Just Married Tags or Stickers

Today’s FREE printables are wedding tags/stickers.  I created a simple “Just Married” design with damask in all black and white, and I also designed one with some hot pink for a little variety.

These free printable tags are 2 inches round, and come 20 to a sheet.  The download is in a PDF format file.  Just download, print, and then cut.  (We recommend a circle punch, like THIS ONE, but scissors work too!  Punches are low cost and once you have one you’ll find zillions of reasons to use it)

You can punch a hole and add tags to your a gift or favors with string or ribbon… or use the design as a cupcake topper.  If you decide to print them on STICKER paper, these will make great seals for favor bags or boxes too!

Happy Friday!

Just a FEW more “little touches”…

It’s been the week for “little touches”, and I have just a few more that I need to share!

First, from Oh Happy Day, a great tutorial for painting baby food jars (and turning them into adorable shabby chic flower vases).  They would be perfect for a baby shower tea party, or even a bridal shower!

How about using twine to make flowers to decorate a table… or turn into a bunting?  Check out this post from Meridian Road for examples of how to use the twine flowers… and THIS POST from the Bug Bytes, with the tutorial on how to MAKE the flowers.

From, I found a simple tutorial for making Flowery Swizzle sticks. Talk about a “little touch” that makes a big impact!

And finally, a simple but FAB “little touch”, we have a variety of Personalized/Customized Wedding Hand Fans in the Diva Entertains shop.

Shabby Chic Wedding Touches

We talked about “little touches” yesterday, and I wanted to continue that theme today with a few more… this time, shabby chic style!

Nothing says shabby chic like burlap and lace together, and I found a very quick and easy tutorial on decorating candles with these two items.  Perfect for a burlap and lace wedding theme (it is actually very popular!) Check out how pretty the final product is… and read the tutorial at Factory Direct Craft:

And continuing the burlap idea, I found a great tutorial for how to make burlap flowers on Snug As A Bug Baby.   This isn’t a wedding post, but you can easily use the tutorial to create burlap flowers to accent your centerpieces or even bouquets!

This next idea isn’t a tutorial, but it is a wonderfully sweet idea.  The bride and groom included a “memory” chair at their wedding, with frames of family members who aren’t with them any more.  The frames made me think “shabby chic”, so I’m including it today.  Isn’t this a lovely idea?

And from Intimate Weddings, a post about ways to incorporate wildflowers into your wedding florals and bouquets.  I especially liked the logs as end tables idea!  A friend recently asked my advice concerning barn wedding decorations and I thought these ideas were absolutely perfect! Yes – barn weddings are also increasingly popular!

What shabby chic ideas have you discovered lately?

Little Party Touches: Chair Bows

We all know that it’s often the little touches that MAKE your party SHINE (or POP, depending on what you are going for).  Today’s post is all about those little touches!  Recently Diva Deb had a lovely backyard party, and here are a few photos from that event. (Try not to be jealous, like I am, of her lovely property…that is PERFECT for backyard parties!)

And a close-up of one of the tables, with a GORGEOUS “little touch” satin roses table-runner (which you can find HERE in the Diva Entertains shop):

A really easy “little touch” is to add sashes or bows to your chairs.  Here is a link to Organza Sashes in our Diva Entertains shop. And check out the photos of the FAB sashes/bows from Diva Deb’s party:

A quick search on YouTube brings up several great how to tie chair sashes tutorial videos on how to do these.  Here is one with a long drape:

And an elegant rosette chair tie:

What kind of little touches do YOU like to add for your events?
