DIY Fall Wreaths

You know what we haven’t talked about yet this season?  Wreaths!!  It’s time to look at a few DIY/How-To wreath posts, I think!  I’ll focus on Christmas and holiday wreaths later, but today’s are all fall/autumn/thankgiving oriented!

So, the first thing I noticed when looking at fall wreath ideas this year is that BURLAP is IN!  You can find a lot of great varieties out there if you google burlap and fall wreath.  This how to make burlap wreaths tutorial from Craftaholics Anonymous, is my favorite:

For a fab Williams and Sonoma wreath knock-off DIY post, check out 320 Sycamore do it yourself wreath!:

You can get inspiration and instruction for  TWENTY fall wreaths to make, over at babble.com: Scroll through all the picks on the site and then click into the ones you are interested in!

From Makely School for Girls, get DIY instrucations for an ADORABLE owl wreath.  Owls are HUGE (just like burlap) this year:

And last, but not least, I have a yarn wreath tutorial for you, from Tiny Prints.  Yarn-wrap wreaths are almost as BIG as burlap wreaths this year!

Caramel Espresso Bars from my friend Liz

My friend Liz is a wonderful cook! As well as a book lover.  For years we’ve shared recipes and book titles:)

Her espresso chocolate caramel bars made me swoon! There are three easy components: a graham crust, a layer of luscious homemade caramel and topped with espresso spiked chocolate ganache.

Thursday Theme – Black and White

It’s Thursday Theme time again, and we’re talking about Black and White today.  Glamorous, old Hollywood, classy… you can’t go wrong with black and white as a theme!

I’ve been sharing mostly about weddings in our Thursday Theme posts, but my first link is a super fun post about an Oscar party.  Many of the ideas work great for any black and white party theme AND she includes several fab free party downloads! I just couldn’t NOT share this post from Twig and Thistle, when I saw the tower of oreos

From Martha Stewart, a lovely cake and candy set-up… in blacks and whites.  Perfect for a black and white wedding theme.  To see more photos from this lovely wedding, including fabulous Black and White cookie favors, Click Here. (Make sure you scroll through the pics!).

From A Diamond in the Stuff, a tutorial for lovely flower pot topiaries.  These would be wonderful and inexpensive black and white centerpieces.  Although soap roses were used her, after I saw how she put together these flower pots (with round styrofoam balls), I knew that I would fill them with Black and White Oreo Pops.  Here is a great tutorial on how to make Oreo Pops!

From Kara’s Party ideas, a lovely post about a black and white party… with a touch of yellow. Lots of great inspiration here!

And finally, from June Bug Weddings, a fun idea for using old records as bowls:  Here’s a step-by-step photo tutorial for how to make a bowl from a record.

Maple Bacon Cookies

Bacon Appetizer Recipes

These delicious maple bacon cookies are a breeze to make.  And they can be made well in advance (1 or 2 days, covered in plastic wrap and refrigerated) and baked up right before serving.  Or bake them early in the day, brush on some maple syrup and serve for breakfast, as a snack (albeit not a healthy one) or as a perfect party bite if looking for a bacon appetizer recipe.

Puff pastry is what makes this so simple.  I always keep a box in my freezer so that I can quickly throw together an appetizer or dessert.  Some cooked, diced bacon and maple syrup – that’s all there is to it!

Theme Thursday – Peacock Colors

We’ve been talking about a lot of different themes for weddings and parties on our Theme Thursdays.  This week, I thought I would do a little more on the topic of PEACOCK color schemes, since it’s such a popular theme lately.  We’re talking royal blues, deep purples, greens, teals and turquoise…

From Brides.com, an incredible tiered wedding cake, with all the fabulous peacock colors:

The easiest way to get TONS of peacock cake inspiration is to go to Google.com/Images and type in “peacock cakes” or some derivative of that (ex: peacock wedding cake).  Then print out the pics of the cakes that you love so that when you meet with your baker you can share your likes (and dislikes).
Also found on Brides.com, a FAB feather clip for your wedding shoes:

Etsy.com is a fabulous source for peacock feather shoe clips (that’s where the above was from) and peacock feather hair accessories.  Just type in those words when you get there!

I found these amazing peacock gown on eDressMe:

And some very original (and gorgeous) peacock ring bearer pillows, from Bronze Budget Bride:

And finally, from our Diva Entertains shop, some gorgeous Save the Date postcard designs:

Happy Theme Thursday!

Fun Cakes For Kids

Today’s post is just for kids… or parents of kids… or the kids at heart.  I have been “collecting” fun (and incredible) cake ideas for kid parties, and thought I’d share a few with you.

First, from Bird on A Cake – a timely Frankenstein cake/tutorial.  You’ll also want to check out all her cake decorating tutorials – you’ll love her creations!

Now, this next one is labeled as a Groom’s Cake, from Cake Balls… but it could just as easily be a kids’ sports cake too! My guess is that she made chocolate truffles and dipped them in different colored candy coating to make the sports ball. Oreo Truffle Balls would work great for these!

I just LOVE this next cake.. and the tutorial that goes with it!  From Bronnie Bakes, a Very Hungry Caterpillar cake.   You can make your own marshmallow fondant that is easy to work with and taste great!

From Gluesticks, another great tutorial… this time how to make a Cheeseburger Cake.  LOVE it!  She uses marshmallow fondant too!

And finally, from Picture Perfect Cakes… I couldn’t pass up sharing this lego cake picture , since I have two lego obsessed boys in my house.  They would LOVE this cake… but might have a hard time letting me cut it up to eat!

Have you made a fun kids’ cake lately?  Let us know… we’d love to hear about it!
